“Who Do You Think You Are?” is a 27” x 17.5” assemblage of original, analog collage creations reflecting on nostalgia with an emphasis on dolls – particularly apt tokens of childhood during the holiday season. Doll play, like crafting, can be seen as childish, but it can also be taken seriously as an outlet for trauma, memories, and a way of processing grief and other strong emotions that arise around holidays and other potentially fraught family occasions.
“Useless Gadget” is a 27” x 17.5” assemblage of original, analog collage creations contrasting the handmade with the strong prevalence of digital culture in USAmerican contemporary society. These collages are likewise fraught with the tension between the connection afforded by technological advancements and the disconnect caused by rampant screen use at the expense of lived human connections. Making this work has helped me to connect with others in an overly digital, disconnected society through exchanging zines on the topic of screentime with pen pals I found through the internet – an exchange that challenges our reliance on technology while being made possible by that same technology.
